Mixed Berry Compote that can be made with either Fresh or frozen Berries! If you haven’t ever made a Compote Before it is a Simply A Delicious Fruit Sauce that takes just 10 minutes to make from start to finish.
You truly cannot go wrong with this simple and quick berry compote. It is the perfect addition to your favourite breakfast or dessert. A compote is simply a fancy name for cooking fruit in sugar. It is different than jam though. Cooking a compote is done so that the fruit pieces mainly stay somewhat intact.
We personally love making this compote when berries are either taking up space in the freezer or they are starting to get a bit too soft for our liking to eat alone in the fridge. Simply whip this compote together to serve on top of your porridge for breakfast or our deliciousssssss cheesecake. We’ll go into more details below on what else you can devour this compote with.
So How Do You Make a Berry Compote
All you need is 6 basic ingredients to pull this baby together: Mixed berries, white sugar, water, lemon juice and vanilla paste, with the option of adding Kirsch or prosecco to the compote mix.
The aim to the compote is to NOT overcook the berries. It’s a low and slow method, you want the berries boiling but not too long that they begin to break down and turn into a jam-like consistency. You want FULL berries still in your compote when you remove it off the heat. As you’ll see from below.
Using Frozen or Fresh Berries
The versatility of berry compotes is truly a wonder why this recipe can be so overlooked at times. With the minimal ingredients required.. it really is a winner of a recipe.
You can use either fresh or frozen berries. Heck even a combination of the two if you would like. You can use any variety of berries that you have on hand at the time. Like when we made the compote for the cheesecake we just had blueberries on hand as you see here.
We personally love the combination of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. But if you only have one fruit on hand you can may a compote with JUST that fruit. So instead of a mixed berry compote it would be a strawberry compote or my favourite, a blueberry compote. **DROOL**
Worth noting that you also can use lemon juice from the jar if you do not have fresh lemon juice on hand.
Options to slather your freshly made compote on
So in my opinion.. this is my favourite part. Adding the compote to everything and anything…
- Breakfast and Brunch – serve this with porridge, yogurt, pancakes or waffles.. the compote really is a delicious addition to these.
- Dessert – spoon it on top of our no-churn honey ice cream, or a huge slice of our classic vanilla cheesecake… so many options.
So many options guys. So next time you have berries that need a new life don’t toss them in the bin, give them a second shot with this berry compote, trust us, you will not be dissapointed. Also.. if you just eat this compote with just some fresh whipped cream.. there is no judgement here. Been there, done that.
